As this P.E.O. year comes to a close, Chapter JM reflects on The Heart of Change we have seen in our chapter. Our path has been one of inspiration, encouragement, and rewarding and has led us in many directions.
As the newest chapter in CO, we continue to be REWARDED with growth in members. This year we initiated Kristi Mitchell and Sally Kaplan; we accepted transfers in from Cindy Pickerel and Jan Gingerich and look forward to two more sisters transferring in in the new P.E.O. year. We were sorry to see Sheryl Benzen go inactive. Our membership numbers have grown from 17 when we were organized in August 2018 to 23 today and soon to be 25 sisters in less than two years!
We were INSPIRED to start our own P.E.O. foundation this year. With the guidance of Diann Eason and Vicki Scherer, our application was accepted along with the money from our first Sunflower Brunch in 2018 to open Colorado Chapter JM Scholarship Foundation. This was a significant undertaking for our chapter, being less than a year from organizing. We began our Dollars for Daisy Scholars to help raise funds for the foundation. Our first event was a Mexican Train party with Mexican food appetizers and prizes. A fun way of raising dollars for our foundation.
Our new Social Committee began the year with a BIL St Paddy’s Day social. Wearing our green, we played Irish Trivia and had a lot of fun. The summer found us having a fun picnic with our sisters from Chapter HG. Christmas was special in Brenda Lewis’ lovely home, where we had our picture taken with Santa (Jim Gingerich), played games, enjoyed a delicious brunch and had a crazy sock exchange.
In August we celebrated our first anniversary and 150 years of P.E.O. in Diann Eason’s lovely yard. Our special visitor was Lia Christians, IZ/CO State Chapter Organizer. A program on our members accumulate years of being a P.E.O. and our special memories were shared. Our total number of years was 298! The fall found us INSPIRED in preparing for our second Sunflower Brunch fundraiser at the Ranch Country Club. Legendary Ladies entertained us again this year with their portraits of women of the past. We had a sold out crowd and a great silent auction. All the proceeds from the auction went to our new Colorado Chapter JM Scholarship Foundation. With donations and the money made from the silent auction we were able to meet the goal of $5000.00 set by P.E.O. Foundation and will look forward to awarding our first Chapter JM Foundation scholarship in the coming year.
We have sponsored a young women from Broomfield High School as a STAR applicant and are anxiously awaiting word, this spring, to hear if she’s been selected.
We began our Fifth Wednesday outings this year. Mary Sefton has organized fun adventures for us. We’ve had lunch and a movie, visited the Quilt Museum in Golden, had a fun pajama party and toured LIFT Chocolate in Boulder. Our small groups continue to grow. We’ve added a walking group and a craft club. We donated twenty four fleece blankets that we had made and fringed to Project Linus as our Community Service Project. Our book club and canasta groups continue to thrive with the addition of new members.
The women that came together almost two years ago to organize a new P.E.O. chapter were ENCOURAGED to continue the traditions of this organization into the future. It has been an exciting journey to be president of this chapter. Our officers and committees have guided us with the spirit that lives in the heart of all P.E.O. Sisters. We look forward as the life of our chapter continues to grow, to the challenges ahead of us and to follow the vision of seven women over one hundred fifty years ago and to that same vision 17 women had to organize Chapter JM.
Janelle, we fondly remember your help and guidance as CO State Chapter Organizer during our year before our chapter was organized. Along with my Sisters of Chapter JM, we wish you many heart filled memories as you continue your term as CO State Chapter President.
Lovingly in P.E.O.
